What they say…
Stockwood Vale Golf Club is often described as Bristol’s best golf secret where no two holes are alike. The par 71 course offers golfers of all abilities the opportunity to play on a beautifully designed and maintained course that sweeps the golfer through the peace and tranquillity of Stockwood Vale. Out of all the golf clubs in Bristol Stockwood Vale is the best draining thanks to miles of underground drainage and the porous limestone under the fairways.
Combine our hugely experienced green staff with the USGA specification greens; 160 acres of undulating land; 12,000 plus trees; meandering streams; miles of drainage and we have created the very best all weather golf courses in the area.
What we say…
StockWood vale was the 3rd of three courses that we played in Bristol over a long weekend. It was by far the best. Everthing the club says about this course is true.
We were lucky not to have to consider the drainage issue as we played on a beautiful sunny day, this only enhanced the stunning course that lay before us. It’s a odd journey into the club, lots of narrow roads that seem to lead no where then all of a sudden you reach the front gates situated at the top of a hill and the course spreads it’s self out in front of you over a beautiful landscape.
The course has plenty on offer, there’s buggy’s galore, a well maintained (electric tee) driving range, a very friendly Pro shop and a nice clubhouse serving good (and well priced) food and beverages.
The first hole is a short par 4, looking down the fairway it looks fairly easy but well placed bunkers and thick rough off to the right hand side caught a number of players in our group out. A short walk takes you to the 2nd a par three, the green is beyond a large dip in the fairway which then presents you the beautiful views across the Somerset countryside.
This is the theme for the rest of the round, memorable hole after memorable hole. The fourth is a fantastic par 3, from an elevated tee shot down to an immense three tier green, if you can get the ball on to the putting surface its still not easy to make par.
The course takes your through every undulation of the countryside, offering you a different type of hole on every hole, the course presents challenging, driving and thinking shots in the perfect quantities. You then get to A truly iconic hole.
If Carlsberg made golf holes this would be it. Teeing from an elevated position 35 metres higher than the fairway, you will be invited to calmly navigate mature trees and topography as you play up to the large green. Every member of our group stood back for a minute or two just so they could take it all in.
What makes this course even better is the price, just £21 on weekend afternoon, if we hadn’t of known the price and were asked what this course was worth it would have been double that amount.
If you’re looking for great course to finish a society weekend then make sure you consider Stockwood Vale, and if your’re in the local area or even an hours drive away and haven’t played this course then we urge you to get down and try it. If it was our local course we would sign a membership form in an instant.
