Hybrids come in so many varieties, but yet some golfers still don’t like them. Typically golfers who don’t like wood-style hybrids, love their irons. If you are an iron lover and hybrid hater, the Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Utility Iron will be perfect for your needs, yet still fit your eye.
Wilson offers a 2,3, or 4 iron replacement with the FG Tour V4 Utility iron. I went with the 2 iron version(18*). I used it as a hybrid replacement. It became my 200 yard club. It is a hollow head with a forged face and tungsten weighting for less draw bias and a sole weight for fine tuning the balance. It comes with a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Black 90 graphite shaft at D2.
It is a perfect match to the FG Tour V4 irons. It really just looks like a fat version of the irons. It has just a little more offset and a fatter sole, but still looks like an iron at address. It will blend in perfectly no matter which lofts you need to replace.
On the course it definitely plays more like an iron, than a wood. I could hit it much easier out of the rough than a typical hybrid. Off the tee it was about the same and off the fairway it was a club that you can go after and take a divot like you would an iron. You can compress it rather than sweep it.
There are 2 main difference between the Wilson FG Tour V4 utility iron and a wood style hybrid. This has much less draw bias compared to most hybrids. That is always the knock on hybrids is their tendency to hit draws. The other biggest difference I found was the consistency of distance. Typically my hybrid hits in a range of yardage, 200 – 215 even at times squeezing out 225. But the Wilson FG Tour V4 utility iron almost always hits the same 200-205 yardage. The distance circle was much tighter.
