Now anywhere that has rows and rows of flags outside of its entrance always look regal, a place of importance and Damme doesn’t shy away from its platinum appearance once you are out on the course.
Damme is the home of the Belguim Masters and other high value Tour events and competitions, it is a place that has held its own against tour golfers and earned a place in Europe’s Top 100 Golf courses thanks to its 2 18 holes course that are both simply magnificent.
The staff here are of the highest calibre, every employee is there to ensure that your experience both on and off the course is nothing but the best they can provide.
We were worried upon heading to the first tee that the torrential down pour that had hit the area the morning of our arrival would see us wallowing through puddles and avoiding standing water, but thanks to its ground staff the course played like it hadn’t see rain at all. Each and every green was quick and true, the bunkers held the water back and the fairways remained spongy and forgiving underfoot, if it was this nice in the rain we can only imagine how good it would have been in glorious sunshine.
There isn’t a bad hole on the 18 hole Championship Course and every inch of the challenging 6805 yards is beautifully sculpted, as one member once said “you don’t even need your club to enjoy Damme”.
The course through its design, which includes a number of natural and landscaped water features proves to be a challenge for the better players, whilst enjoyable to the less talented golfer. Over 50% of the holes play you stand toe to toe with the designers and their joy for water hazards, the par 3 5th hole provides the scene for one of the most enjoyable golf holes we have played.
The short hole 155 yard hole has you confused on the tee, it looks like it should play longer than it does, the water on the right and tall trees on the left squeeze the fairway tight to the wood line and the green slopes towards the surrounding bunkers and into more water, and like previous holes out of bounds is just behind the green. However if you’re not completely scared into hitting a slice and do you hit the green then a good birdie chance awaits you.
Hole 12 is wonderful par 5 but it does not contain a single bunker, instead water can be found down the left and out of bounds flanks the right to make the tee shot a true test for all golfers. With the wind in your face the drive proves to be even more difficult and even when you have reached the fairway the test continues, the hole shifts around to the left and dog legs between the ponds on both sides of fairway.
If you can overcome the water, the OB, the strong winds and the two ponds and somehow hit the green without issue, putt carefully and run away with a par.
The course tests you until the very end of your round. Again… water everywhere! In front of the tee, to the left and even if you’re long off the tee, and to make things a little harder out of bounds to the right. Although a short par 4 the 18th keeps the adrenaline pumping until the final putt, conquer the tee shot and you’ll need a good short iron over the pond to hit the green
Dame is a majestic venue, its course is even further complimented buy its facilities. The changing rooms, pro shop and clubhouse would be at home amongst some of the finest hotels in Europe. Pure class.
